History of the Kentucky Derby

 Kentucky Derby History

The first Kentucky Derby was held on May 17, 1875 on a track Meriweather Lewis Clark was built in 1874. Aristides was the first horse to win. Jockey Oliver Lewis is one of thirteen African American Jockeys  and the first race in the Derby. Records show about 15,000 people gathered for the first Kentucky Derby.

Another interesting fact is that the first track is 1.4 miles long. It was later shortened to 1.25 miles, along the race today. The difference a quarter mile really makes a difference believe it or not. There may be changes in 2014 to the qualification process also more than some people realize too. The more you know about the history of the Kentucky Derby, the more you can enjoy the race.
